Taurine in energy drinks. Is it safe?

Taurine, an amino acid that helps the body do a lot of different things, is thought to be an antioxidant. But very little is known about the long-term effects of taking extra taurine.


Taurine is found in meat, fish, dairy products, and human milk. It can also be found in supplements. Some studies say that taking taurine supplements might help you be better at sports.

The research isn't very clear, though. It also turns out that taking taurine supplements three times a day for two weeks helped people with congestive heart failure improve their ability to work out.

Other studies say that when taurine and caffeine are used together, they improve mental performance.


However, more research is needed to confirm this, as well as the use of taurine in energy drinks, which is still up in the air. There may be a lot of other ingredients in energy drinks, like herbal stimulants, caffeine or sugar. Keep in mind that these other ingredients may be in high amounts in energy drinks.


Too much caffeine can raise your heart rate and blood pressure, make it hard for you to sleep, and make you feel anxious. Adding sugar might give you extra calories that you don't need.
